What is Flexible working?

Flexible working entails that employees can make work schedules as per their preferences. Flexible working does not only refer to working from home, rather it talks about working from home, cafe or office. It is totally up to employees how they want to work. It helps to boost employee morale by giving them the flexibility to work according to their preferences. It reduces stress over the employees and makes them manage their work-life balance as well. In a flexible work schedule, employees use collaborative tools that allow them to work from anywhere and connect with their teammates effectively.

Flexible working is apt for work from the office as the employees are allowed to shift their workstation and work on their projects with flexible work timings. As per a survey, it has been noticed that 63% of employees chose flexible working which improved their productivity and made them more engaged in their projects. However, the employees should maintain a common time to connect with their team members to get the work done within deadlines.

Advantages of flexible working

Increasing engagement

Flexible working gives flexibility to employees to work with high productivity. It allows them to choose flexible working hours and work as per their preferences. They have the freedom to start earlier and later which promotes employee engagement. It makes them feel more valued which makes them more engaged and productive at the same time.

Maintaining work-life balance

Flexible working also helps employees to fulfil their personal commitments and maintain a work-life balance. It changes their overall behaviour and reduces stress and strain overall. They work with complete freedom and flexibility, which boosts their employee morale. They do not need to juggle their professional and personal commitments. It makes them more relaxed while doing flexible work. It makes them more loyal to their job and organisation.

Giving more client support

Flexible working hours come with giving more clients support that is beneficial for the organisation. Flexible working means employees do not have any time bindings for conducting meetings and conferencing with clients who are in different time zones. They do not need to sit for long hours in conference halls. Instead, they can move their workstation as per their preference and comfort.

Disadvantages of flexible working hours

  • There are so many disadvantages associated with flexible working hours. Some people are more engaged in taking care of household errands, rather than meeting professional commitments in remote working structures.
  • Working flexible hours is not satisfactory for every employee. Collaborative tools are used to get connected with the teammates but are not effective in terms of building relationships and creating a strong bond among the team members. It makes some employees feel isolated. This is the reason behind chronic depression in the long term. Being in isolation and depression makes an employee less productive in their work.
